Common Merganser - success!

A hen Common Merganser, with chicks, Little Beaver Creek, Columbiana County, Ohio, June 2nd. Jim Dolan and Dan Justice explored the stream looking for evidence of successful nesting, and were rewarded. Jim took this photo, and the next, as was kind enough to share them with us.

Little Beaver Creek, which ranks high among the highest quality rivers in Ohio, has the only known regularly breeding population of these massive saw-billed fish-eating ducks in the state. Thanks to the work of Jim, Dan, and others, they seem to be slowly increasing, too.

You can read more about the mergansers HERE. Thanks to Jim Dolan for the update, and the use of his photos.
